When you build your cabin or barn from a kit you have a lot of control over how much you spend on the project. You can build it yourself, hire a "barn raiser" to help with the hard part, or a hire a contractor.
We have itemized the actual cost of building a barn home. For this project the owners already lived on the property so the septic and electrical was partially ready for the new home. The owners acted as their own general contractor and hired out the majority of the labor and did some of the finish work themselves.
The owners of this Western Classic Style Barn Home chose a combination use for the space. The downstairs has 2016 square feet including the covered porches. The downstairs floor plan includes a large sewing and craft room, open heated shop area, a full bathroom/laundry room combination and a commerical grade kitchen.
The upstairs is the living portion of this home with an 1152 square foot open floor plan. There's room for a reading nook, office area, bedroom, bathroom with clawfoot bath tub, massive walk-in closet, wet bar and living room that opens onto the deck. At nearly 3200 square feet this barn kit could easily be a traditonal three bedroom, two bath home.

TOTAL COST ESTIMATOR Once the shell is up you can do the interior finish work yourself, act as your own general contractor and "sub" out the finish work or have your contractor finish the project for you.
